Is Antigua safe?
No page can promise safety. What you can do is read the current travel advice and apply it to your plans. The advice below applies to the whole country. None of the three governments names English Harbour as a separate warning area, and no local crime statistics for English Harbour are published.
Most of the risks that travel advice does name are practical: strong currents, robberies in quiet areas after dark, and hurricane season. All three can be managed with simple habits.

Safety on the beach and in the water
Currents are the risk travel advice names most clearly.
British travel advice warns of deceptively strong currents. Not every beach has lifeguards or warning flags. Do not assume a guarded or child-proof bay at Galleon Beach or Pigeon Point near English Harbour. The same warning applies when you snorkel. Do not count on lifeguards, rescue boats or quick medical help at remote spots.
Treat Devil's Bridge, the natural limestone arch on the Atlantic coast, as a place to look, not to swim. The Atlantic water around the arch is not cleared for swimming.
Swim near others
Choose a beach where other people are in the water, and stay close to the shore if you do not know the conditions.
Galleon Beach and Pigeon Point →Snorkel with a plan
Wind and waves change the conditions. Boat trips can be called off for weather, so compare what each operator offers in that case.

Crime, taxis and local rules
Practical points from the travel advice.
After dark
The German Foreign Office warns of robberies in quiet areas and on unguarded beaches after dark. After an evening at Shirley Heights or a beach bar, take a licensed taxi instead of walking quiet roads or beaches. The operator lists the Sunday party at Shirley Heights as 4:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Shirley Heights guide →Taxis
British advice says to use licensed taxis only. Agree the fare before you start.
Getting there →Smoking and clothing
Smoking in public places is illegal. Wearing camouflage clothing is banned, so leave it at home.
Driving
Traffic keeps to the left. Visitors need an additional driving permit, and the police or your rental company issue it.
The national park
The National Parks Authority publishes park boundaries for land and sea. Commercial filming or photo shoots in the park need an agreement with the authority. Ordinary holiday snapshots are a different matter.
Nelson's Dockyard guide →Hurricane season and walking safety
Plan for the season and the terrain.
Antigua Met lists the hurricane season as 1 June to 30 November. The sheltered position of the old naval harbour is no promise of storm safety. Read the cancellation terms of your hotel and tours, and watch the forecast of the Antigua Met Service before every sea trip. The monthly averages are on the weather page.
Hiking trails exist, but nothing guarantees that every path is open today. The Middle Ground trail between Fort Berkeley and Pigeon Point runs about 1 mile, with steeper parts and ropes in places. A local guide runs the Pillars of Hercules section only if the weather permits. Wear sturdy shoes and bring sun and insect protection.
Traveling on to another island? Entry rules differ by island. See the St. Thomas travel requirements before you plan the second leg.
Antigua safety: frequently asked questions

UK and German advice use no numbered scale for Antigua and Barbuda, and the US lists Level 1. None of them names English Harbour as a warning area. The dated wording is in the table, so check the live pages before you go.
Is English Harbour safe at night?
The German Foreign Office warns of robberies in quiet areas and on unguarded beaches after dark. Use a licensed taxi after an evening out.

No. British advice states that smoking in public places is illegal, a change from March 2026.
When is hurricane season?
Antigua Met lists it as 1 June to 30 November. See the weather page for monthly averages.
