Antigua beaches from English Harbour

Antigua has beaches on every coast, and the right one depends on where you sleep and how far you want to travel. From English Harbour, two beaches are close: Galleon Beach and Pigeon Point. Others, such as Rendezvous Bay on the central south coast and Half Moon Bay on the east side, need a longer trip or a tour.

The selection below is editorial. It is not a ranking, and no official list puts one beach ahead of another. Access, fees and facilities differ from beach to beach, so ask locally before you plan a full day around one place.

The tourism authority gives no travel times from English Harbour to the last three beaches. Work out the route and the time before you go, and do not assume you can fit two of them into one day.

The beaches next to English Harbour

Galleon Beach is listed at the English Harbour address, in the parish of St. Paul's, and can be reached by car or by water taxi. Pigeon Point is named as a swimming stop after the Dockyard. A path along the heights, the Middle Ground, links Fort Berkeley with Pigeon Point.

Neither beach has a guaranteed set of lifeguards, fees, loungers, showers or parking. The Galleon Beach and Pigeon Point page gives the details and the walk between them.

Turquoise water and white sand on Green Island

Rendezvous Bay

A south coast beach with a harder approach.

The tourism authority places Rendezvous Bay on the central south coast and names a 4x4 or a footpath as the access. That does not mean that every rental car can reach it by a public road, so ask your car hire company before you drive.

A hiking operator lists a long guided route to Rendezvous Bay of 14 miles and about 5 hours, rated hard, at $50 for adults and $30 for children under 16. That is a long tour route, not the length of every way to the beach. Read the trail details on the hiking page before you decide.

The white sand of Half Moon Bay on Antigua's east coast

Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay is a crescent-shaped beach. The tourism authority lists it under the east coast, while an older island guide places it on the south-east coast. Either way it is not a beach in English Harbour, and you need a car, taxi or tour to reach it.

Conditions can differ between stretches of a beach and from day to day. Go by the conditions you see and the current official advice, not by an old guide. The British Foreign Office warns of deceptively strong currents on Antigua and notes that not every beach has lifeguards or warning flags.

Dickenson Bay and the day trip stops

Beaches and viewpoints that fit a tour better than a self-drive day.

Dickenson Bay

The tourism authority describes Dickenson Bay as a beach and going-out area, with evening entertainment. It is a different kind of place from Galleon Beach, so do not treat the two as equivalent. No transfer time from English Harbour is published.

Round-island and reef trips

A catamaran operator lists a round-island trip from $135, with snorkeling, lunch and a bar, and a Cades Reef trip from $120 with snorkel time, a beach stop and lunch. Its main page mentions Green Island and passing English Harbour, but passing is not a boarding point. These are "from" prices. Age groups, taxes, online fees and any transfer to English Harbour are not broken down, so confirm the final price and the pickup place before you book.

A land tour with beach and sights

One island tour lists Stingray City, Betty's Hope, Devil's Bridge and Long Bay, with hotel pickup, an air-conditioned van and the Stingray City entry, for $180 per person and about 5 hours in the 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. window. This is that operator's own product and not a general price. See the Stingray City page for the animal contact side of such trips.

Devil's Bridge

A tourism guide describes Devil's Bridge as a natural limestone arch with blowholes on the Atlantic coast near Indian Town Point, east of Willikies. It is a rock formation, not a built bridge, and it is not in English Harbour. A nearby area is described as a local swimming place, but that is not an all-clear for the arch or the open Atlantic. Treat it as a viewpoint.

Safety, season and arriving by ship

Points that apply to every beach.

Currents and supervision

Currents can be deceptively strong, and not every beach has lifeguards or flags. See the safety guide for the official advice.

After dark

The German Foreign Office mentions robberies in quiet areas and on unguarded beaches after dark. Leave before dusk or arrange your transport in advance.

Season

The hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, according to the Antigua Meteorological Service. The weather page has the monthly climate figures.

From the cruise port

English Harbour is a separate trip from the cruise port in St. John's, so beach plans need a time buffer. See from the cruise port.

If your trip also takes in the Virgin Islands, the St. Thomas beaches guide compares the beaches there.
