Cruise port and English Harbour are two different places
Antigua Cruise Port is in St. John's, by Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay. The operator lists 5 working berths, and ships can tender when needed. English Harbour with Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights lies on the south coast, so a visit is a real excursion and not a stroll from the pier.
A bus guide from June 2026 puts the ride from the West Bus Station in St. John's to English Harbour at 45 to 60 minutes. Add the walk from the ship, waiting for the bus and the trip back. No single driving time for a taxi from Heritage Quay to the Dockyard is published, so do not use one number for every mode of transport.

Three ways to reach English Harbour
Compare time, price and risk.
| Option | Time | Price | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi | No single published time | An undated fare sheet lists $24 or EC$64 from St. John's to the Dockyard | The sheet is not an official 2026 tariff. Agree the fare before you get in. |
| Bus 17 | 45 to 60 minutes, plus the walk from the ship and waiting | Ask the driver | West Bus Station via All Saints, Liberta and Falmouth. Minibuses leave when full and there is no fixed timetable. |
| Organized shore excursion | About 5 hours for the island tour listed here | $180 per person | Hotel pickup is listed. Confirm whether pickup is at your pier. |
The $180 tour includes Stingray City, Betty's Hope, Devil's Bridge and Long Bay and runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. It does not visit English Harbour. Use it as an example of what an island tour costs, not as a price for a Dockyard trip.

Antigua shore excursions: what to look for
Check these points on every offer.
Where the tour starts and ends
One island tour lists hotel pickup and return but does not say it collects guests at the cruise pier. Ask for the exact meeting point and the drop-off point.
Park entry
A national park advertisement from 2025 lists $15 for Nelson's Dockyard, Shirley Heights and the Dow's Hill Historical Centre together. No 2026 tariff is documented, so confirm the current entry price and whether your tour includes it.
Nelson's Dockyard guide →Opening hours
The park website lists 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday. The 2025 advertisement lists 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The two sources differ, so check the current hours for your call.
Guided visits that need a booking
The National Parks Authority sells Clarence House tours on Wednesdays at 9 a.m. or 3 p.m. for $20 or EC$50, with a maximum of 10 people and a reservation required. The Rum in the Ruins tour runs on Fridays at 5 p.m. for $25 or EC$65, also by reservation.
Evenings
The Shirley Heights Sunday party runs from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. according to the venue. It only suits a ship that stays late in port.

Know your all-aboard time
Ship time and the all-aboard time are set by the cruise line for your voyage. No fixed buffer is given for Antigua, so plan your own and keep a margin.
Add up the whole trip
By bus, one way is 45 to 60 minutes, plus the walk to the station, waiting for the minibus to fill and the walk to the pier. Double it for the return, then add your time at the Dockyard.
Independent trips have no return guarantee
A tour you book yourself does not come with a promise that you reach the ship on time. Ask the operator what happens if the tour runs late.
Tender days
The port operator says tender operation is possible when needed. A tender adds time at both ends, so allow for it.
Documents and entry
Rules depend on your nationality and your cruise line.
Germany: the Federal Foreign Office lists visa-free entry for up to 90 days with a passport or provisional passport, not an identity card, and asks for documents valid 6 months beyond the trip. Check what your cruise line requires for a day visit from the ship.
United States: the State Department allows US cruise passengers a WHTI-compliant alternative document, but still recommends a passport in case you have to fly home. Other nationalities should ask their cruise line.
If your itinerary also includes the Virgin Islands, see the guide to the St. Thomas cruise port.
