Hiking around English Harbour in short

The hills around English Harbour hold old military ruins, viewpoints and short trails. The best-known walk is the Middle Ground between Fort Berkeley and Pigeon Point. For longer or more remote routes, guided walks are the usual choice, and several operators publish routes and prices.

The trails exist, but nobody can promise that every path is open and in good shape on your day. Conditions change, so ask locally before you set out and treat every length and time below as a guide, not a measurement.

The trails in detail

What each walk is like.

Middle Ground

The National Parks Authority describes heights between Fort Berkeley and Pigeon Point. The path is also called the Goat Track. It crosses a historic African cultural landscape and military remains. A marine guide gives about 1 mile, notes steeper sections and ropes in places, and says you can also start from the road between English Harbour and Pigeon Beach.

Galleon Beach and Pigeon Point →

Pillars of Hercules and Carpenter Rock

A local hiking operator starts at Galleon Beach and combines Fort Charlotte, Mermaid Gardens and Shirley Heights. The Pillars are included weather permitting. The guided tour takes 3 hours and costs $70 for adults and $40 for children under 12. The operator rates it Intermediate. Do not assume the coastal path can be walked at every tide.

Signal Hill at Wallings

The Wallings reserve lists a Medium walk of 5 miles in 2½ hours. Adults pay $30 or EC$81 and children under 16 pay $20 or EC$54. The reserve says prices can change and mentions a ranger for the tours. Another listing quotes an unassisted rate of $25 for Signal Hill, so ask which rules apply to your booking.

Rendezvous Bay

The tourism authority describes access to this south coast beach by four-wheel drive or on foot. Wallings sells its own route of 14 miles and 5 hours, rated Hard, at $50 for adults and $30 for children under 16. That is a long guided tour and not the length of every approach to the beach.
