From the airport to English Harbour
V. C. Bird International Airport is the island's air gateway. English Harbour lies in the south. The tourism site lists Galleon Beach, which is in English Harbour, about 21.4 km from the airport and 21.0 km from St. John's. These are listed distances, not driving times.
One accommodation provider in English Harbour gives about 40 minutes by road from the airport. Treat that as an operator guideline, not a promise for every address. Traffic and your exact destination change the time.

Taxi from the airport
The simplest way with luggage.
An airport taxi association describes transfers and pickup at the airport. For specific destinations it gives a price on request. It recommends booking 24 hours ahead but does not make that a rule, and its online booking is marked as coming soon.
A fare table for licensed taxis circulates online. It lists the airport to English Harbour at $31 or EC$82 and St. John's to the Dockyard at $24 or EC$64. The table carries no confirmed date, so treat it as a rough guide and agree the fare with the driver before you start. Use licensed taxis only, as British travel advice puts it.
Bus connections to English Harbour
Cheap, but slower and with changes.
Airport to St. John's
A bus guide from June 2026 lists bus 42 toward Airport Road/Coolidge, not directly to the terminal. You change in St. John's and move between bus stations. The walk from the airport and current departures are not published, so plan extra time.
St. John's to English Harbour
Bus 17 runs from the West Bus Station in St. John's via All Saints, Liberta and Falmouth to English Harbour. The same guide gives about 45 to 60 minutes. There is no fixed timetable, and minibuses leave when they are full. Ask the driver for the fare.
Up to Shirley Heights
No scheduled bus to the Shirley Heights lookout is published, and bus 17 does not go up the hill. For the Sunday party, read the access options on the Shirley Heights page.
Shirley Heights guide →Car hire and driving on the left
Permit rules, as of October 2026.
Traffic keeps to the left. Visitors need an additional driving permit. The German Foreign Office gives about EC$50 and names the police or the car hire company as the place to get it. The US State Department gives about $20 and says it is valid for 3 months. The two figures are rough amounts in different currencies, so ask your rental company what it charges.
Check the rental terms for age limits, insurance and deposit with your provider, as they differ. Water taxis link the Galleon Beach side with the Dockyard. Ask locally for times and prices.
If you plan a second island, the St. Thomas airport and car rental guide shows how differently another Caribbean island handles the same questions.
Entry rules and the ArriveAntigua form
Official guidance, as of October 2026.
German citizens
The German Foreign Office lists visa-free entry for up to 90 days for German citizens. You need a passport or a provisional passport; an ID card is not enough. The documents should be valid for 6 months beyond the trip, and air travelers should hold an onward or return ticket.
Passport validity differs
Antigua's immigration service asks for a passport valid beyond your return date. British travel advice names 6 months from arrival for British passports. These are different rules for different nationalities, so check the one for your passport.
The online form
ArriveAntigua is a digital arrival and departure form. British advice calls it voluntary and says to use it within 72 hours before travel. The German Foreign Office recommends it, for mobile devices only and without an app. Use your own government's current travel page for the final word.
Departure tax
British advice says the departure tax is usually in the air fare, and regional airlines can differ. A cabinet decision of 24 June 2026 raises the passenger head tax from $40 to $50, with CARICOM travel exempt from the increase. Ask your airline whether the new amount is already in your fare.
